Posted on October 7, 2014

Northwest Technology Center held its first graduation ceremony for the Practical Nursing program before a packed house this past Sunday at 2pm in the Seminar Room of NWTC-Alva. Eight students completed the Practical Nursing curriculum this past week and are ready for licensure testing in the upcoming months.

2014 Graduates of Northwest Technology Center’s Practical Nursing program include: (back row l to r) Jessica Winn-Barrett, Chandra Murrow, Cole DeQuasie, Cayenne Criswell, (front row l to r) Diane Duffy- Practical Nursing Director, Starlette Hall, Kelsey Gum, Katy Parker, Kasey Burton and Tara Thomas-Practical Nursing Instructor.

The students started the eleven month program in November of 2013. Instructors for the program are Diane Duffy, Tara Thomas and Debra Button. The keynote speaker for the event was DiAnna Waldschmidt, former Health Instructor and BIS Health Services Director at NWTC.

During their eleven month curriculum, the students participated in classroom instruction, clinical experiences and participated in HOSA skill-building competitions. Each of the graduates placed in the top 3 at the state HOSA contest in their respective events and advanced to the National HOSA contest. At the National contest, all eight placed in the Top 10 and six of the eight brought home bronze medals. All of the graduates took WorkKeys certification tests and earned either Silver or Gold level certificates.
NWTC’s program has received approval by the State Board of Nursing. The Board determines the number of students which can be trained each year and specifies the curriculum and approves clinical sites for the program.

The Practical Nursing program will begin again in early November with a new group of students. The application process for the 2015-2016 class will begin in July of 2015. Due to stringent testing and certification requirements, the Practical Nursing program has a separate application and admission process from other programs offered at NWTC.
