Posted on June 28, 2013

Beginning in August of 2013, high school students enrolling at Northwest Technology Center will have a new program choice. Biomedical Sciences using a curriculum developed by Project Lead The Way will be available for students interested in a career in the healthcare industry.

The program will be available for high school students on both the Alva and the Fairview campuses. It will encompass four “Biomedical “ classes, two science courses and two high level mathematics courses. Students who enroll in the program will receive four high school credits each year. .

According to the Project Lead The Way Curriculum, first year students take Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Anatomy/Physiology and a Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus or other advanced mathematics course. Second year students would take Medical Interventions, AP Biology, AP Statistics and Biomedical Innovations, a capstone course.

The Biomedical Sciences instructor on the Alva campus will be Jennifer Shaw. Shaw comes to Northwest Technology Center from Caney Valley High School. Shaw is a certified science instructor. She also will be certified by Project Lead The Way to teach the high level science curriculum. Shaw is a teacher who likes hands on activities, so students might find themselves doing dissections or modeling human muscle groups.
The Mathematics portion of the course will be taught by certified Math instructor, Lane Pruett. Pruett comes to NWTC from Burlington High School, but he is a former staff member at Alva High School.

The Biomedical Sciences instructor on the Fairview campus will be Shawn Cusack. Cusack is a certified science instructor. He also will be certified by Project Lead The Way to teach the high level science curriculum. Ashlee Smart of Seiling will be the math instructor for the program. Smart comes to Northwest Tech from Waynoka High School.
