Posted on January 12, 2015

Northwest Technology Center (NWTC) was recently ranked highest among technology centers of comparable size and budget for the total number of enrollments by The Journal Record in the 2014 Book of Lists. The listing was published on November 26, 2014.

According to the listing, Northwest Technology Center had 17,055 total enrollments during the 2013-2014 school year. This ranking places NWTC eleventh of 26 among Oklahoma’s Technology Centers in terms of enrollment. This includes daytime programs, adult training and development and business and industry training programs. Northwest Technology Center has 44 employees, including 33 certified staff members, spread between its Alva and Fairview campuses.

“Our numbers have been trending upward for the past several years,” stated Dr. Gerald Harris, NWTC’s Superintendent. “The amazing part of this is that we do this with a small hard-working staff and a small budget. Our Business and Industry staff has been doing a great job serving clients in the energy sector. According to the Journal Record, enrollments in our Business and Industry classes during FY13 totaled 15,851.”

Northwest Technology Center offers seven daytime programs on its Fairview campus including: Automotive Technology, Business and Information Technology, BioMedical Sciences, Culinary, Digital Design, Health Careers Certification and Welding. Eight daytime programs are offered at the Alva campus including: Auto Collision Technology, Automotive Technology, BioMedical Sciences, Computers and Business, Construction Trades (Plumbing and Electrical), Digital Design, Health Careers Certification and Practical Nursing.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Education, NWTC served 34.57% of the eligible high school juniors and seniors in its school district during the 2013-2014 school year. This number is over 16% higher than the statewide average. The school has been named as a Gold Star School, nine times since 2002. This is the highest form of recognition for a technology center.

Northwest Technology Center’s school district encompasses the cities, towns and school districts of Alva, Aline, Canton, Cherokee, Chester, Carmen, Cleo Springs, Dacoma, Fairview, Freedom, Longdale, Ringwood and Waynoka and parts of the Okeene and Seiling school districts. Founded in 1968, NWTC began offering classes at both campuses during the 1972-73 school year. Northwest Technology Center is a part of Oklahoma’s CareerTech system.
