NWTC Students Increase Leadership Skills

Approximately 50 students involved in the Leadership Classes at Northwest Technology Center’s Alva and Fairview campuses and High Plains Technology Center in Woodward participated in a session entitled, “Building Yourself As A Leader.” The session was facilitated by Steve Kliewer, Business and Industry Services Director at Northwest Technology Center’s Fairview Campus.

Northwest Technology Center students learned about leadership and increasing leadership skills this past week during the school’s monthly Superintendent’s Leadership Class meeting held at Northwest Technology Center in Fairview. The students from Northwest Technology Center’s Alva and Fairview campuses were joined by students from High Plains Technology Center (HPTC) in Woodward for the activities.

The group participated in an educational program entitled, “Building Yourself As A Leader.” The curriculum was part of a series called, “Leadership, The West Point Way.” Six leadership traits were presented. They included: ethics, communication, teamwork, delegation, willingness to change and failure. Steve Kliewer, Business and Industry Services Director on NWTC’s Fairview campus facilitated the session. Approximately, 50 first year leadership class students participated in the session.

This is the eleventh year for Northwest Technology Center to have a leadership program. Students participate in a professional application and interview process to become a part of the class. The group members attend monthly meetings with topics such as business and professional etiquette, teambuilding and leadership. The students will end the year in March at a final celebration. A separate curriculum is planned for the second and third year students including a session on career development and selecting a university. The leadership class is sponsored and funding is provided by the Northwest Technology Center Foundation.

Students participating in the leadership class for the first year on the Alva campus include: Aimee Boatman, Alyssa Brewer, Devin Goddard, Kally Gordon, Taylor Hadwiger, Brianna Kurtz, Traci Owen, Katlin Ramy, Nicole Ritter, Josef States and Sage Sunderland, all of Alva. Students participating for a second or third year include: Marshall Whitley and Conner Whitley, both of Cherokee, EmmaRae Cook, Connor Cummings and Matt Martin of Alva.

Leadership Class students on the Fairview campus participating for the first year include: Breanna Nightengale, Shasta Hess, Danielle Robinette and Ashley Tucker of Fairview, Shycotta Tomlinson and Ryan Tomlinson of Cleo Springs, Elizabeth Perez and Lacey Belvin of Ringwood and Samantha Thomas of Longdale. Students who are participating in the program for a second year include: Connor White, Braden Smith, Brandy Nunn and Brittany Pester of Fairview and Nataly Trejo of Ringwood.
