Twelve area seventh grade students were selected for the Northwest Career Academy program at Northwest Technology Center. The students spent four days touring area businesses and learning about economic opportunities available for them throughout Northwest Oklahoma. The academy ran May 28-31.

During the academy, the group participated in industry visits, tours, panel discussions and preformed a community service project. Cherokee and Alva businesses participated in the tours. Those businesses included, Alfalfa Electric, Great Plains Health Center and Vantage Plane Plastics.

Rhett Laubach is the founder/operator of YourNextSpeaker, LLC and PLI, Inc. Laubach and his team provided training and activities for the academy. Laubach is also co-creator of Each1 Only1, a personal college recruiting training program. His Personal Leadership Insight curriculum teaches students how to “positively influence people and situations to create value and growth,” according to his website.

Students selected include: Morgan Hamen, Aline-Cleo; Karlee Dietz, Kaleigh Henke Da Vion Murrow, Julie Owen, Lane Scarbrough, all of Alva; Bethany Lancaster and Sydney Wyatt, of Cherokee; Colton Tautfest, Fairview; Nicole Hughes, Freedom; Brylee Burnett, Ringwood; and Tatum Rose, Waynoka.

These students also presented at the Recognition Banquet, designed for parents, past participants of the academy and recognition of students of the 2013 academy. This year the banquet hosted Kelly Barnes from YourNextSpeaker. Barnes presented life lessons, personal stories and leadership qualities to all the participants.

The students were housed at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and participated in activities coordinated by Allan Poe, Ag Business Management Instructor at Northwest Technology Center.

Each summer for the next five years, these students will participate in activities designed to stimulate an interest in locating businesses and finding careers in Northwest Oklahoma. At the end of the five year program, the students will receive a scholarship to be used for higher education courtesy of a local bank or financial institution.

Area businesses sponsoring this year’s class included: Alva State Bank, Banc Central, Community Bank of Alva, Cleo State Bank, Farmers Exchange Bank of Cherokee, Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fairview, First State Bank of Waynoka, Freedom State Bank and Oklahoma Rural Rehabilitation Corporation. Northwest Tech also provided the meals, facilities and training resources for the academy students.
