Northwest Technology Center in partnership with Alva Public Schools, has hired a School Resource Officer. The hiring of Officer Kris Jones was approved at the school board meetings of both entities. Jones is a two-year veteran of the Alva Police Department. She has one son, Wesley who is first grader at Washington Elementary.

According to Jones “The police department was really excited to have this opportunity to work with the schools to increase student safety and to deter criminal behavior on campus.”
Although her schedule will vary depending on the needs of each campus, Jones plans to spend time daily on the five Alva Public School campuses and at Northwest Technology Center. She will be mainly responsible for safety issues on campus and disciplinary issues when requested.

Jones spent eight years in the army before joining the Alva Police Department. She will finish her degree in Criminal Justice at NWOSU in May and plans to eventually pursue a Master’s Degree. She hopes to one day hopes to teach classes in Criminal Justice. Jones graduated from High School in Denver.
She is CLEET Certified and has participated in many conferences and trainings during her time with the Alva Police Department. She will attend Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) training later this month. After completing this training, she will work on student programming including: Drug Awareness, Sexual Assault, and Bullying Awareness.

Jones will also be working on faculty seminars including: Lockdown Training and Intruder on Campus Training. Another goal will be for her to become aware of the layout of each of the school buildings and the campuses for tactical purposes, should it ever be needed.

“I am excited to have this opportunity to work with the Alva Public Schools and Northwest Technology Center”, said Jones, “I am focused on keeping the students at our schools safe. I am also excited to provide them programming that will help them to keep themselves safe and help them to make good choices where drugs, alcohol and other types of criminal behavior are concerned.”

“The safety of our students is our first priority.” stated Steve Parkhurst, Alva Public Schools Superintendent. “We are excited about the opportunity to work with the Alva Police Department and with Northwest Technology Center to help increase the safety level on our campuses. Having Officer Jones around for just a couple of days has already helped by decreasing the number of students speeding out of the parking lot at the high school.”

Daren Slater, Assistant Superintendent, NWTC-Alva, said that, “Partnerships with Alva Public Schools and the Alva Police Department are a great way for us to pool resources and to increase the campus safety level for our students. We are excited to have Kris on our team.”
