Northwest Technology Center announced today that it is now accepting applications for its Practical Nursing program beginning in November of 2014. The application deadline is August 29. Classes for the 12 month program will begin in early November. The program is available to students from throughout NWTC’s district. Instruction for the class will be held primarily at the Alva campus but clinical sites will rotate at healthcare facilities throughout the area, including, Fairview, Enid and Alva.

Ashlee Sneary, Human Resources and Financial Aid Director at Northwest Technology Center was one of thirty Oklahoma technology center financial services staff members recently learned more about the Oklahoma CareerTech System and the issues that confront their offices in TechCENT$. Northwest Technology Center, Fairview campus recently held its annual National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) installation. Thirty-one students were inducted into the honor society along with eight returning members. The group is sponsored by Jane Harris, Guidance Counselor and Jessica Schanbacher, Digital Design Instructor. Students must meet strict criteria, including attendance, academic performance and character to be considered for the NTHS. Read more information and view photos ...

NWTC students, Austin Turner and Tejay Purcell placed in the SkillsUSA Auto Tech District Contest held February 13, 2014, at Fairview. Turner placed first in the Post-Secondary Auto Tech Division and will go on to the statewide contest held in late April. Purcell placed sixth in the secondary division and is a student at Alva High School. Also competing in the secondary division, but not pictured, was Cale Angle from Cherokee High School. All three students are enrolled in the Automotive Technology Program at NWTC Alva Campus and their instructor is Ron Rader.

Who are the graduates of Oklahoma’s CareerTech system? They are nurses, roofers, electricians, plumbers and truck drivers. They might also be doctors, dentists, engineers, teachers and attorneys! In these crazy economic times, CareerTech is even more important for Oklahomans. “It would be unlikely to go through life without coming into contact with CareerTech,” said Dr. Gerald Harris, Superintendent at Northwest Technology Center. “The system has a profound impact on all of us, whether we realize it or not.” Northwest Technology Center is one of Oklahoma’s 29 tech centers that are celebrating February as CareerTech Month. Activities such as community service projects performed by Career Tech student organizations, community meetings, special seminars and many other events will be taking place throughout the month of February. CareerTech will also sponsor several events at Oklahoma’s state capitol.

Northwest Technology Center in partnership with Alva Public Schools, has hired a School Resource Officer. The hiring of Officer Kris Jones was approved at the school board meetings of both entities. Jones is a two-year veteran of the Alva Police Department. She has one son, Wesley who is first grader at Washington Elementary. According to Jones “The police department was really excited to have this opportunity to work with the schools to increase student safety and to deter criminal behavior on campus.”

Northwest Technology Center in cooperation with Alva High School and Northwestern Oklahoma State University will present a workshop on financial assistance for higher education. The workshop, “The Insider’s Guide for Applying and Receiving Scholarships” is planned for Monday, January 13 at 7pm in the Seminar Room at Northwest Technology Center, 1801 Eleventh Street in Alva. January has been designated as School Board Appreciation Month by the Oklahoma School Board Association (OSBA). Experience and continuity on all types of boards are important, but on school boards, it is crucial.
