Beginning in August of 2013, high school students enrolling at Northwest Technology Center will have a new program choice. Biomedical Sciences using a curriculum developed by Project Lead The Way will be available for students interested in a career in the healthcare industry.

Twelve area seventh grade students were selected for the Northwest Career Academy program at Northwest Technology Center. The students spent four days touring area businesses and learning about economic opportunities available for them throughout Northwest Oklahoma. The academy ran May 28-31.

Northwest Technology Center students involved with the BusinessProfessionals of America (BPA) student organization recently attended the National BPA Convention in Orlando, Florida. The Small Business Management Team placed in the Top Ten in the Small Business Management event. Team members included: Lani Espy, Lanita Davis, Miriam Renteria, and LouAnn Rojas. Ten students at Northwest Technology Center’s Alva campus received scholarships from the Northwest Technology Center Foundation. The students were presented the awards at the annual Awards Assembly held earlier this week . Charlotte Hadwiger, Business and Industry Services Director at Northwest Technology Center’s Alva campus was recently recognized with the Post-Secondary Adult Career Education (PACE) Award of Excellence by the Oklahoma Association of Career and Technology Education’s Career Business and Industry Training (CBITS) Division.

Students completing the business and culinary programs recently combined efforts to sponsor a Business Dining Etiquette Luncheon as a final course capstone project. Students enrolled in Business and Information Technology researched business dining etiquette and planned and presented to class members and guests. Students from the Culinary program planned, prepared, and served a five-course meal.

Amanda Beckner, a resident of Fairview, Oklahoma, graduated from Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in Okmulgee with an Associate in Applied Science in Office Information Systems Technology. She was on the President’s Honor Roll. Graduation services were held Friday, April 26, 2013. Beckner earned 42 of the required 60 degree hours through an articulation agreement with Northwest Technology Center in Fairview, Oklahoma where she was enrolled in the Business and Information Technology program instructed by Lisa Fuller.

Nineteen Northwest Technology Center students were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society earlier this month. The induction ceremony took place in the Seminar Room in front of a large crowd. Both secondary and post-secondary students who meet the requirements and are enrolled in Daytime Programs are eligible for membership in the organization.

Two Northwest Technology Center (NWTC) students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program finished 8th in the Statewide Ford AAA competition. Fairview High School seniors Keeton and Kale Neufeld put together the Top 10 finish at the recent competition held at OSU-Okmulgee.

Ashley Muhlbaier and Zain Jackson-Douglas won third place in the Career Health Display in the recent Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) state competition. Both are adult students completing the Health Careers Certification at Northwest Technology Center in Alva. Their instructor is Sarah Washburn.

Northwest Technology Center was recognized by the Fairview Chamber of Commerce as the “Business of the Year” at the Taste of Fairview event. Dr. Gerald Harris, NWTC’s Superintendent is shown receiving the award from State Representative Jeff Hickman.

Top students from Northwest Technology Center’s Fairview Campus, recently attended the Business Professionals of America (BPA) 2013 State Leadership Conference, “Uncover Your Magic,” in Tulsa, March 5-6, 2013. BPA members placing first in an event include: Small Business Management Team members, Lani Espy, Lanita Davis, Miriam Renteria and LouAnn Rojas; George Williams, 1st, Information Technology Concepts. These students qualify to attend the national competition to be held in May.

The BPA members qualified to attend the state conference and competitive events based on work submitted and online testing. Megan Garnett earned Top Ten recognition in Graphic Design Promotion and Fundamentals of Desktop Publishing. Dianna Gonzalez earned Top Ten in Graphic Design Promotion. Northwest Technology Center announced today that Charlotte Hadwiger, Director of Business and Industry Services on the Alva campus has successfully completed a course to become certified as an Occupational Hearing Conservationist (COHC) administered by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC).

Congrats to the Auto Tech program at Fairview! Three of their students placed in the District Auto Contest. Kale Neufeld finished 4th in the High School Division and in the Post-Secondary Division, Trae Stelzer won first place and Erik Williams placed second. Both Trae and Erik will advance to the state competition. Great job to Mr. Watson and his students!

Northwest Technology Center, hosted its annual Advisory Committee Meeting during the first week of February. Each program at the technology center organizes an Advisory Council of five to ten patrons. Staff members collect feedback on their respective program from the committee members both at the meeting and at other times throughout the year. Approximately 150 community members attended the events.

January has been designated as School Board Appreciation Month by the Oklahoma School Board Association (OSBA). Experience and continuity on all types of boards are important, but on school boards, it is crucial. The Northwest Technology Center Board of Education has over fifty years of combined service. Its longest serving member has been on the board for thirty-five years, with one member who has just served since September.

Many people dream of starting and running their own business and being an entrepreneur! Members of Northwest Technology Center’s Superintendent’s Leadership Class learned about Entrepreneurship during a recent trip. The group traveled to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and toured the Robert S. Kerr Center for Food and Ag Products (FAPC). The group from Northwest Technology Center in Alva was joined by students from Northwest Technology Center in Fairview and High Plains Technology Center (HPTC) in Woodward.
